IRCC Announces Continued Immigration Support for Hong Kong Citizens

Today the Canadian government made an announcement by Paul Chiang, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Diversity Inclusion on behalf of the Immigration Minister Sean Fraser,  concerning the continuation of immigration assistance for Hong Kong citizens who reside in Canada. The announcement includes the modification of the Hong Kong Permanent Residence Pathway to increase the number of Hong Kong applicants having Canadian work experience to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence.

One of the largest sources of immigrants from Asia countries in Canada are Hong Kong residents. Since 2021, the Canadian government has been actively supporting Hong Kong residents and opened a dedicated pathway to permanent residence for citizens of Hong Kong who have either work experience or studied in Canada  under two special streams:

  • Stream A (For in-Canada Graduates)
  • Stream B ( For people with Canadian Work Experience)

On August 15, 2023, the education requirement will be dropped from Stream B – the Canadian work experience stream,  of the Hong Kong permanent residency pathways. Previously, the Canadian work experience – Stream B, was eligible to Hong Kong residents who have graduated from a post-secondary learning institution in Canada or abroad and have at least one year of work experience in Canada. With today’s announcement, applicants may submit a permanent residency application as long as they have at least one year of work experience in Canada because the academic requirement has been removed.  This would make it possible for more skilled Hong Kong citizens who have worked in Canada and have a temporary residence status to obtain permanent residency and become a valuable addition to the Canadian Labour market.

This will as well help former Hong Kong citizens having Canadian work experience who aren’t currently in Canada to come to Canada on a permanent basis and use their unique talents and experience in the Canadian workforce and promote Canada’s economy.
