Canada Opens a New PR Pathway for Ukrainians

Canada opens a new PR pathway for Ukrainians which will be effective in October 2023 this is a family reunification pathway to aid those affected by war. The new pathway will provide chances for Ukrainians in Canada who meet the requirements to remain in Canada.

On Saturday, The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, announced a new pathway for temporary residents of Ukraine, which will enable them to reunite with their families and remain in Canada as permanent residents.

Effective October 23, 2023, the new Permanent Residency Pathway for Ukrainians in Canada with temporary resident status and who have at least one family member with Canadian citizenship or permanent residence status will be open.

This family reunification permanent residency for Ukrainians is a measure taken by the Canadian government to support Ukrainian nationals due to the continuing war in Ukraine. The program is expected to start on October 23, 2023, and end on October 22, 2024, among those who will be eligible include Ukrainian spouses, common-law partners, parents, grandparents, siblings, and children or grandchildren of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who are in Canada on a temporary resident status.

Ukrainians holding a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) visa will have until March 31, 2024, to travel to Canada under the temporary special measures set up by the Canadian government. The last day for acceptance of CUAET applications on July 15, 2023, however, Ukrainians can still apply for a temporary resident visa (TRV) to come to Canada.

Once in Canada on a TRV, Ukrainians and their families will be able to extend their stays for up to three years through study permits and open work permits, which IRCC will prioritize. Ukrainians can also make use of relocation services including language classes and job placement assistance. These services are designed to facilitate Ukrainian immigrants’ easy integration into Canadian society and help them prosper in our country.

Closer to October, when the pathway will be made available, more thorough information on the pathway will be released.
